President Woodrow Wilson asked Howard Coffin to inventory U.S. factories to determine the country’s capacity for defense production. To educate the public about the urgent need for preparedness during World War I, Flagg was commissioned to create a keynote image for a publicity campaign. His painting depicts an "armless" Columbia and appeared on the cover of the magazine Puck in May 1916. Coffin, founder of the Sea Island Company and cousin of Alfred W. Jones Sr., received this original oil on canvas. |
