Portrait of James Gould (1772-1852).19th century copy of a portrait painted ca. 1830. James Gould was builder and first keeper of the first St. Simons Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1810 and Gould was keeper until 1837. The lighthouse was destroyed by the Confederate Army in 1861.

Painting: "Armless" by James Montgomery Flagg, oil on canvas, 1916. Flagg (1877-1960) was a noted American artist and illustrator. To educate the public about the urgent need for preparedness during World War I, Flagg was commissioned to create a keynote image for a publicity campaign. His painting depicts an "armless" Columbia and appeared on the cover of the magazine Puck in May 1916.
